accreditation and certification

intended audience

This activity was developed for physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals caring for low birth weight infants with PDAs.

statement of need

It is evident that a diversity of opinion and practice patterns exist around the diagnosis and treatment of PDA. Though rapid and accurate diagnosis can lead to optimized treatment results and minimized complications, diagnosis is often delayed for a variety of reasons. Treatment is often based more on institutional practice than individual patient condition and risk factors. This activity will look at factors to be considered in choosing optimal treatment protocols for low birth weight infants with PDAs.

learning objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Utilize appropriate tools and information to provide a timely and accurate
diagnosis of PDA
Examine various treatment options including conventional care, surgical,
and medical management with cyclooxygenase inhibitors
Provide optimal management of patients with PDA based on various factors
Incorporate data on timing, dosing, safety and efficacy into treatment planning
for specific patients

Pharmacists will also be better able to assess the differences between pharmacologic treatment options to enhance patient health.

Nurses will also have a better understanding of various treatment protocols to assist both patients and their families through the recovery process.
