accreditation and certification
intended audience
This activity was developed for cardiologists, internists, endocrinologists, and other physicians
treating patients with diabetes and hyperlipidemia.
statement of need
At least 10.3 million Americans carry a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus, predominantly type 2 diabetes;
and those classified as type 2 are at high risk for cardiovascular events.
Since 75% to 80% of adult diabetic patients
die of coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, or a combination of these conditions,
lipid abnormalities in these patients should be aggressively and efficiently treated.
Though statins have shown great benefit in at-risk
patients, lipid levels in many individuals fail to reach the goals established in current guidelines. In addition,
statins and niacin may have adverse effects on glucose metabolism. In these clinical senarios, it is important
to consider other therapeutic alternatives.
This activity will examine the interplay of diabetes
and heart disease, as well as review recent clinical trial data, to better understand and implement the available options.
objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Utilize current AHA, ADA, and NCEP ATPIII guidelines and recommendations in treating hypercholesterolemia in diabetic patients
- Describe the interplay between hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome
- Assess the efficacy and safety of current therapeutic approaches
- Evaluate recent clinical trial data
- Assimilate optimal treatment approaches into clinical practice
