overview

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain illness characterized by widespread musculoskeletal aches, pain and stiffness, soft tissue tenderness, general fatigue, and disordered sleep, estimated to affect at least 2% of the US population.

Since the American Medical Association identified fibromyalgia as an illness in 1987, its recognition, understanding, and diagnosis have improved, although both diagnosis and treatment are still not well understood by physicians.

Because diagnosis of fibromyalgia continues to be a challenge, it is also important for physicians to participate in ongoing education from physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of patients with this misunderstood, mysterious disease.
