Intended Audience
This activity was developed for retinal specialists and other ophthalmologists
treating patients with age-related macular degeneration.
Statement of Need
Age-related macular degeneration is a progressive, chronic disease
of the retina. It is the leading cause of severe visual impairment in the elderly. More than 1.6 Americans ages 50 and older have AMD.
This unique 60-minute webcast will focus on the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of AMD, include approaches to
the early detection and management of macular lesions. Two leading ophthalmologists with expertise in AMD will present state-of-the-art
information on the disease and its optimal care. As part of this in-depth CME-accredited program, the faculty will provide case studies
to illustrate key points relative to detection of the disease, and strategies to halt its progression and minimize vision loss.
Both traditional and emerging therapies will be discussed, including their efficacy, optimal use and pharmacoeconomic considerations.
Induction and maintenance approaches will be emphasized. In the interactive portion of the program, audience members will have the
opportunity to answer multiple choice questions that will demonstrate their own understanding of the topic.
Participants will find this program practical and immediately useful for improving the day-to-day management of their patients with AMD.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
• Discuss how earlier diagnosis and treatment may result in better vision outcomes
• Evaluate clinical data and real-world efficacy experience with VEGF inhibition
• Explore the issue of systemic risk in VEGF inhibition
• Describe emerging experience with combination therapy approaches, including induction/maintenance strategies
• Debate alternatives in AMD treatment regimens
